TACKLE FOOD WASTE
We want to help you to take steps to reduce food waste in homes and restaurants.

FOOD WASTE CAN OCCUR IN MANY WAYS

Food waste can occur in farms, when "ugly" fruits/vegetables are thrown away. It can also occur when the food is processed, packaged, and delivered. Food waste is also prevalent in restaurants, especially when customers don't finish their food, and in homes, where a lot of food is thrown away when it goes bad.

40% OF ALL FOOD IS WASTED IN THE US

Over 37 million Americans are food insecure, while there are copious amounts of food being thrown away at homes, restaurants, and farms. Even just allocating 15% of the food that's being thrown away now would reduce the amount of people who are food insecure by half.

FOOD WASTE ALSO HAS A HUGE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

It's the largest source of waste in landfills, making up 20% of it. When food decomposes, it also releases methane gas, which is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, which makes global warming worse. Wasting food also wastes the resources (like farming, packaging, and transporting) that were used to get the food to you.

WASTING FOOD IS ALSO EXPENSIVE.

Around the world, about 1 trillion dollars of food is thrown away. In America, an average family throws away about $1500 of food each year. As a result of that, food waste also negatively impacts our economy.

ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Anna Chan, and after working in a restaurant and seeing how much food was thrown away at the end of the day, I felt determined to do something about it, so I created this website to educate others about the steps they could take to reduce food waste.
